The Chainsmokers is a popular band made up of two individuals, Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. Some of their best-known songs are “Closer”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, and “Roses”, all of which were popular on EDM radio stations. Something that makes this band different from other bands in their genre is that they have written some of the songs they sing. Typically musicians in this genre rely on professional songwriters for everything they do. They want to stand out as true artists rather than just people in a DJ booth.
Alex Pall says that he became a DJ early in life. It started out as a childhood hobby. Once he was old enough he began to DJ at various locations around New York City and he says it was something he was really passionate about. He had at first been pursuing DJing as a side gig. He says that he considered DJing as something that was fun rather than a job. One day he made the realization that creating dance music was his life’s passion and something he ought to be doing on a full-time basis. His manager, who he still works with, connected him with Taggart and right off the bat their combination worked out great.
When Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart got together professionally they talked quite a bit about their musical philosophies and what type of music they had enjoyed when they were younger. They had both been carefully watching the DJing scene and knew what was working and what was not working for other artists. They started to work together every day of the week and Alex Pall says they were essentially with each from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. They co-developed their identity as artists and came up with their own sound.
Getting back to writing the lyrics to their songs, Alex Pall says that they work with songwriters but do a lot of the work themselves. He says that some of their songs they completely write themselves as well. Others they are more guiding where the lyrics are going. He says each song has a unique background but they’re all their own songs.
The Chainsmokers is a duo comprised of DJ/producers Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. The duo got their start playing at clubs and venues in New York City. Their first show was opening for Timeflies at Terminal 5 in 2012. Other venues that they have also played at are Marquee Vegas and Opium Barcelona.
The Chainsmokers first broke into mainstream music in 2014 with their hit single #Selfie which was on the top 20 charts in many countries. After that, their success began to climb exponentially. They released their debut EP Bouquet in October of 2015. The album featured the single Roses which made the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This single catapulted them to the spotlight and The Chainsmokers began to release hit after hit. Their single Closer featuring Halsey was in the number one spot for 12 weeks, and Don’t Let Me Down featuring newcomer Daya won a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording. The Chainsmokers released an EP album,
Collage, in November of 2016, followed by a studio album, Memories…Do Not Open in April of 2017.
In the past, Pall and Taggart have said that they are still figuring out exactly what their sound is, and their new single Sick Boy makes it evident that their sound may be evolving. The music is a lot darker than the music from their last album. According to Taggart, the inspiration for the darker sound stems from anger and frustration. It is a reflection of how people feel when they put themselves out to the world, intending to relay a message but the world takes that and interprets it into something different, especially when it comes to social media. The duo plans to have Drew Taggart as the front man on this new album (before they were both producing the music and would have featured artists singing) and they look forward to giving the world more of what they have to offer.
In this video, famous YouTube vlogger, “Wengie”, watches some of her earliest YouTube creations while simultaneously filming her reactions in real time. Wengie views several videos and provides the audience with her thought processes back then versus her thoughts now.
The first video we see is Wengie’s very first trailer. While watching this video, she jokingly criticizes herself for being unable to utilize a perfect writing motion while adding a cursive text effect to the video. In the next video, she seems a little surprised by her voice; stating that she sounds really different now and was probably nervous at the time of recording. It is during this video, that Wengie also offers a chance for the audience to leave comments afterwards, as she asks if people in the US call the objects she is using “pipe cleaners” (They refer to them differently in Australia).
After the second video, Wengie spends a few moments explaining why her videos are so different now, including an increase in confidence and comfort in front of the camera. Wengie then proceeds to show us a video of when her hair was brown and her focus was on filming herself making various treats. Wengie tells the audience that this former self was “cringy”, but she was appreciative of the time and effort she spent on transitions for the video. The vlog ends with Wengie providing another short overview on how her videos have changed since the time she first started. She states she will be doing a similar video the next day.
In conclusion, this vlog by Wengie was really enjoyable. Even though she described her past videos as “cringy”, she provided her fans with her charming personality and a side-by-side comparison between her vlogging style years ago, and the style she uses now. I would recommend this video to anyone who enjoys watching people with cute, playful personalities.
