Music producer and stage manager, Clay Hutson, prides himself on his mindfulness of all aspects of his industry. He works alongside the lighting, sound, and related equipment riggers. His duties range from ensuring equipment will fit through doorways at a venue to choreographing the production of a performer’s acrobatic stunts. Hudson builds substantive relationships with the artists he works with, noting that talented people are not always the most personable.
In a May 2018 interview, Clay Hutson speaks on how he decided to start his company and how he makes it work. Originally, his thoughts were not on starting his own company but on building skills and dedicating himself to his various employers. However, when the organization he worked for began to struggle, he decided he had the skills, experience, and connections to become a successful production manager. He states that he owes his success to carefully planning each day and always thinking ahead.
Although he enjoys producing extravagant shows with technological props, Clay Hutson reveals he prefers to showcase the self-expression and theatrics of his performers. He speaks of his ability to envision each aspect of a show, of hearing the sound and seeing the lights. Hutson uses computer-aided drafting design to bring his visions to reality.
The music industry is fierce and fast-moving, yet with his multitude of skills and powerful connections, Clay Hutson is flourishing. He works with artists from several music genres, handling clients such as Kanye West, Guns N’ Roses, and Lady Gaga. For the second time, Hutson acted as production manager for Kid Rock’s tour from August through October 2018. His work ethic calls for always putting forth a best effort and in assembling teams that reflect that belief.
Born in Tennessee, Clay Hutson has always been a music lover. One of his first forays into the production industry was as a member of pastor Billy Graham’s sound team. He changed his focus to musical performers out of passion and has since traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia with some of the industry’s biggest names.
The Chainsmokers is a popular band made up of two individuals, Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. Some of their best-known songs are “Closer”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, and “Roses”, all of which were popular on EDM radio stations. Something that makes this band different from other bands in their genre is that they have written some of the songs they sing. Typically musicians in this genre rely on professional songwriters for everything they do. They want to stand out as true artists rather than just people in a DJ booth.
Alex Pall says that he became a DJ early in life. It started out as a childhood hobby. Once he was old enough he began to DJ at various locations around New York City and he says it was something he was really passionate about. He had at first been pursuing DJing as a side gig. He says that he considered DJing as something that was fun rather than a job. One day he made the realization that creating dance music was his life’s passion and something he ought to be doing on a full-time basis. His manager, who he still works with, connected him with Taggart and right off the bat their combination worked out great.
When Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart got together professionally they talked quite a bit about their musical philosophies and what type of music they had enjoyed when they were younger. They had both been carefully watching the DJing scene and knew what was working and what was not working for other artists. They started to work together every day of the week and Alex Pall says they were essentially with each from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. They co-developed their identity as artists and came up with their own sound.
Getting back to writing the lyrics to their songs, Alex Pall says that they work with songwriters but do a lot of the work themselves. He says that some of their songs they completely write themselves as well. Others they are more guiding where the lyrics are going. He says each song has a unique background but they’re all their own songs.
Billboard’s 2017 Women of Music list spotlights Desiree Perez, Chief Operating Officer of Roc Nation. The New York native and savvy businesswoman joined illustrious Roc Nation, the mega-entertainment, and music label, in 2009. Ms. Perez and Shawn Carter, also known as rapper Jay-Z have been acquainted for over 20 years. She has always been a behind the scenes force in his corporate decisions. Now, in the role of COO, she takes on the totality of the brand’s labeling and publishing operations. Her day-to-day engagements are inclusive but not limited to orchestrating marketing initiatives, creating business partnerships, representing the label’s artists, and positioning music tours. The intense negotiator also focuses on growing the company while producing high profits for its shareholders.
Desiree Perez is known for spearheading high-profile collaborations such as Sprints $200 million deal with Roc Nation’s TIDAL streaming services. This strategic move set the record label up for further successes by offering 1 million free downloads of the new Jay-Z album 4:44 to its Sprint customers. This led to the album’s platinum success prior to the album being officially released. The 4:44 Album Tour garnered 21% more profits than that of Jay-Z’s Magna Carter Tour five years ago.
Desiree Perez, also known as Dez Perez to her circle of influence, also played a major role in Rihanna’s Anti Tour promotion negotiations with Samsung; transcending singer Rihanna’s career into superstar status. Even The Queen Bee-Beyonce, has attained business input and contract deliberations from Ms. Perez for her recent Formation Stadium Tour. The clear-sighted COO keeps the music industry plateauing with sharp, innovative concepts, forging new heights for the Roc Nation brand. She unceasingly trends on the music radar as one of the most influential execs in the entertainment sector today.
The Chainsmokers is a duo comprised of DJ/producers Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. The duo got their start playing at clubs and venues in New York City. Their first show was opening for Timeflies at Terminal 5 in 2012. Other venues that they have also played at are Marquee Vegas and Opium Barcelona.
The Chainsmokers first broke into mainstream music in 2014 with their hit single #Selfie which was on the top 20 charts in many countries. After that, their success began to climb exponentially. They released their debut EP Bouquet in October of 2015. The album featured the single Roses which made the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This single catapulted them to the spotlight and The Chainsmokers began to release hit after hit. Their single Closer featuring Halsey was in the number one spot for 12 weeks, and Don’t Let Me Down featuring newcomer Daya won a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording. The Chainsmokers released an EP album,
Collage, in November of 2016, followed by a studio album, Memories…Do Not Open in April of 2017.
In the past, Pall and Taggart have said that they are still figuring out exactly what their sound is, and their new single Sick Boy makes it evident that their sound may be evolving. The music is a lot darker than the music from their last album. According to Taggart, the inspiration for the darker sound stems from anger and frustration. It is a reflection of how people feel when they put themselves out to the world, intending to relay a message but the world takes that and interprets it into something different, especially when it comes to social media. The duo plans to have Drew Taggart as the front man on this new album (before they were both producing the music and would have featured artists singing) and they look forward to giving the world more of what they have to offer.
